Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

- IUI is artificial insemination of specially processes sperms into uterine cavity around the time of ovulation.

- During semen processing the semen is washed & processed to separate healthy sperms from seminal plasma , other blood cell ,any viral or bacterial contamination & dead / poor quality sperms.

- These inseminated sperms reach fallopian tube by natural swimming movement & are expected to fertilize the oocyte in natural way.

Who can benefit from IUI :

  • Ovulation problems -when initial treatment fails

What to expect before IUI treatment :
  • Couple evaluation to know if you will benefit from IUI.
  • Usually maximum 3-4 cycles of IUI are recommended.
  • Ovulation induction medication from day 2-4 menstrual cycle
  • 3-4 short OPD visits for USG follicular monitoring between day 8-14 of period.
  • IUI procedure after confirmation of ovulation.
  • Tubal patency test is done if there is any suspicion about tubal block.
What to expect during IUI treatment :
  • No hospitalisation is required.
  • You are asked to read the label on tube of processed semen sample to verify your name & your husband’s name.
  • IUI procedure is done with utmost gentleness & care.
  • 3-4 short OPD visits for USG follicular monitoring between day 8-14 of period.It’s a quick & relatively painless procedure.

  • Anaesthesia / sedation during IUI is rarely required in select cases with history of vaginismus.
  • Bed rest is advised only till you feel comfortable to get up & walk.
What to expect after IUI treatment :
  • You can carry on with your daily routine from same day.
  • Slight lower abdominal cramps or very light spotting can happen for 1-2 days.
  • Check pregnancy test with home urine test kit after 14 days of procedure.
  • Plan a follow up if there is fever , bleeding or persistent pain is there.
How successful is IUI treatment :
  • Usually 8 -20 % pregnancy success chance is expected per IUI cycle.
  • Factors which determine IUI success are – age of woman , number of ovulating follicles , duration of infertility , cause of infertility & quality of semen sample.
